Terms of Use

1. What Toothhound is

Toothhound is a free planning tool for shark tooth and fossil hunters. It provides location dossiers, tide and weather forecasts, AI-assisted identification, and a personal logbook. It is informational only and is provided “as is” without warranty of any kind.

2. Safety

Hunting beaches, rivers, quarries, and creeks involves real risk: drowning, hypothermia, lightning, falling banks, marine life, and remote exposure. You are responsible for your own safety. Hunt Scores reflect productivity, not safety. Always check local marine forecasts, advise someone of your route, and turn around when conditions exceed your skill or kit.

3. Legality

Fossil collecting laws change by jurisdiction, season, and ownership. National parks, state parks, USACE land, tribal land, private property, and many international heritage sites prohibit or strictly regulate collecting. It is your responsibility to verify current legality before you collect. Toothhound flags known restrictions but cannot guarantee they are current.

4. Heritage sites

Sites tagged heritage-only are documented for educational and observational purposes. Do not collect at these sites. Toothhound does not endorse, encourage, or assist illegal collecting.

5. AI identification

The AI tooth identifier is a probabilistic guess from a general-purpose vision model. It is wrong sometimes, confidently. Use it as a starting point. For taxonomically important specimens, consult a museum or qualified paleontologist.

6. Your content

Your logbook entries belong to you and live on your device. If a future feature adds optional cloud sync or community sharing, it will be opt-in and we’ll explain the trade-offs.

7. Intellectual property

The Toothhound name, logo, dossier text, and Hunt Score model are © 2025–2026 Toothhound. The application code is source-available; see the repository. Underlying scientific facts are public domain. Map tiles © OpenStreetMap contributors, styled by CARTO.

8. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Toothhound and its contributors are not liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or exemplary damages arising from use of the service — including injury, property loss, citations, or fines.

9. Changes

We may update these terms. Continued use after a change constitutes acceptance.
