Visibility is near-zero — divers fan the gravel bottom by feel ("braille diving"). Strictly hobby-permit + boat + ideally guided; this is not a beach you walk up to.

October through early December typically brings the lowest, clearest water on the Cooper, Stono, and Ashley rivers — peak season for licensed dive hunts on Chandler Bridge and Ashley Formation gravel.
Drift-dive a charter boat with a current line. Fan gravel deposits along the bottom by hand — visibility is typically <1 ft. Surface only when your float-flag signals; the river is heavily trafficked. Hobby Diver License finds must be reported quarterly to SCDNR.
Boat access only; no shoreline collecting. River bottom is South Carolina state property — collection requires the SCDNR Hobby Diver License. Most non-local divers go through a licensed Charleston-area charter (e.g. Cooper River Dive Charters and similar).
SCDNR Hobby Diver License is mandatory ($50/year for residents, more for non-residents). Quarterly significant-find reporting required. No collecting from private river frontage without permission. Surface-supplied diving and lift-bags are restricted — read the current SCDNR rules before booking.
